About Us
Phillips & Co. Builders
Building and renovating homes properly, with clear communication and a structured process that keeps clients informed from start to finish.
How It Started
Over 25 years of building experience
My interest in building started at school in woodwork class. After finishing school, I moved to Hamilton to play hockey and began a building apprenticeship at the same time. After a few years in Hamilton, I returned to my home town of Palmerston North where I completed my training and continued developing my experience in the industry.
I spent 15 years working for the company I completed my training with, gaining experience across a wide range of projects and eventually working my way up to a foreman role. Those years gave me a solid foundation and shaped the way I run Phillips & Co. today.
During that time I learned many lessons that still guide how we operate today. The importance of clear communication with clients and trades, being organised on site, and having good systems and processes in place to keep projects running smoothly.

Building on experience
After 15 years in the industry, I decided it was time to start my own company. Phillips & Co. Builders has now been operating for over 10 years, specialising in both new homes and renovations.
I'm a Licensed Building Practitioner and a Registered Master Builder, and I work with a trusted group of subcontractors and suppliers who share the same standards we do. Together we focus on delivering projects that are well built, well organised, and clearly managed from start to finish.
Life Outside Work
Family, sport & community
Outside of work, my time is mostly spent with my family. My wife and I have two teenage boys and sport plays a big part in our lives. You'll often find me on the sideline watching cricket or hockey, or involved more directly through coaching. I coach our local hockey club's premier men's team and am also involved with the provincial men's team.
I'm also a keen golfer, and getting out on the course plays an important role in maintaining a good balance between work and family life. Being involved in the local community is important to me, whether that's through coaching, serving on club committees and boards, or supporting local teams and players through sponsorship.
Our Approach
More than just building
For me, building is about more than just the finished house. It's about helping people create a place they'll live in for years to come, and making sure the experience of getting there is straightforward and well managed.
It's an approach built on clear communication, strong processes, and making sure there are no surprises along the way.
Our Values
What we stand for
Quality
We don't cut corners. If something isn't built to the standard we expect, it gets fixed. We work with trades who take pride in their work and who stand behind the finished result.
Honesty
We price projects realistically and communicate openly. If something changes, it's discussed and agreed before work proceeds. Clear conversations prevent surprises.
Professionalism
We show up when we say we will, communicate clearly, and treat every client and project with respect. Our work reflects the standards we expect from ourselves.
Accountability
If we say we'll do something, we follow through. Variations are documented, processes are followed, and every project carrying our name is our responsibility.
The Team
Meet the builders
Most projects have a foreman on site daily, with overall supervision from me. There is always clear responsibility.
Max
Foreman & Qualified Builder
Max joined us through the Gateway Programme at Palmerston North Boys' High. He completed his apprenticeship with us and qualified in 2023. On site, he leads by example, coordinates trades and keeps daily operations moving. Outside work, he enjoys the outdoors, golf, and time with his dog Frank.
Blake
Qualified Builder
Blake also came through the Palmerston North Boys' High Construction programme. He qualified in 2025 and is a regular presence on site, getting stuck in and maintaining standards. He plays hockey, waterskis and takes pride in his Toyota Land Cruiser.
George
Apprentice
George joined us in 2026 straight out of school. He's building his skills the right way. A keen athlete, he recently competed in the Coast to Coast, placing second as part of a school team, and is also a surf life saver.
